PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS

NEDIM  ÖKMEN ANADOLU ÖĞRETMEN LİSESİ
(coordinating school)
Kilis, Turkey

The school is situated in Kilis, a small border city in the south east of Turkey. It is a boarding school in which more than 550 students, majority of whom are girls, are educated. The school also has a kindergarten with two classes of 40 students aged 5-6.
The boarding students stay at the dormitory of the school and visit their families once in one or two months in order that their success of  lessons are not affected negatively. The school is a high school and nearly all of the students aim at majoring in teaching profession upon graduation from our school. The students are educated in the areas of social science, science and technology and language. The success level of the students are pretty high and the language level which we give in our school is B2.
We attach great importance to international cooperation. We believe that such kind of projects help people of different nationalities to get rid of their fear and prejudices and help to establish a better and peaceful world. We must think that every step we have towards understanding each other is like a small stone we put to construct a building.

ST PAUL'S CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Leicester, England
Saint Paul’s Catholic School is placed in a middle-class area. There are only two Catholic secondary schools in Leicester and the children who come to this school are principally from primary schools that are Catholic; not only primary schools in Leicester, but in the neighbouring areas. In recent years the number of non-native UK students has increased enormously and now they represent 23% of the total school population, with Poland and Goa the main countries they come from.  However, we also have students from Africa, Latin-America and Eastern Europe. 42% of the total school population are from ethnic minorities. Many of these students run the risk of being marginalized because of their lack of English language knowledge and the pressures of adjusting to live in a foreign country. This project will give the students involved the opportunity to know more of their country of origin, giving them a sense of identity and pride in their achievements and increasing their confidence, a skill highly valued in the job market.

GIMNAZJUM NR 3
Promnik, Poland
Gimnazjum nr 3 is located in Promnik village in a small commune Strawczyn (about 10.000 inhabitants) in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. The area is mostly dominated by agriculture and is one of the poorest regions of Poland with a high level of unemployment.
There are about 100 teenagers studying in our school at the moment and some of them come from disadvantaged socio-economic families. Unfortunately, they do not have many possibilities of spending their free time after school (there are no places such as language schools or sports clubs in the village). As our students are definitely in danger of marginalization, we would like all of them, especially those with special educational needs, to take an active part in the project.

ESCOLA BÁSICA E SECUNDÁRIA DE VELAS
São Jorge (Azores archipelago), Portugal
The school is in the town of Velas and it is currently comprised by 699 students from pre-school to the 12th grade, 52 employees and 102 teachers.
Besides the classes, there are extracurricular activities, such as sports and clubs, namely music, art, European studies, science, math, chess, foreign languages, reading and entrepreneurship.
This institution is located in a disadvantaged area and has pupils with special needs. The disadvantage comes from the fact that we live in an island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. So all the projects that give our pupils the chance to contact with students and the reality of other countries are taken very seriously by all the school community.
